We are delighted to announce the 2nd European Scientific Legal Tech Summit at Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU) on 26 and 27 March, 2026. After the inaugural European Scientific Legal Tech Summit on “Automating the Rule of Law”, WU’s Legal Tech Center once again – in cooperation with the OEFG working group on Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights and ICON.S Austria – wants to bring together international scholars to discuss their research on “genAI in legal practice”, with a particular focus the fundamental rights perspective.

Generative Artificial Intelligence (genAI) represents a paradigm shift that also has the potential to transform legal practice. Not least from the perspective of fundamental rights protection, genAI poses significant challenges for legal practice, but also has the potential to strengthen human rights protection. With this call for papers, we invite submissions contributing to the scientific debate on the (actual or potential) transformation(s) of legal practice through the use of genAI, focusing on but not limited to questions of fundamental rights.

The core of the Summit will consist of presentations based on papers collected through this call. We aim to gather a wide scholarship and welcome contributions from different disciplines (law, IT, data science, economics, political sciences, philosophy etc). As we plan on inviting speakers to take part in an anthology, to be published after the Summit, preference will be given to unpublished papers not yet accepted for publication elsewhere.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • ethics (of legal professionals) and genAI
  • the potential of digital humanism for legal practice
  • the impact of automation and other biases on legal practice
  • genAI in public administration/courts or in law firms
  • legal data science
  • the impact of GDPR, AI Act, or DSA on use of genAI in legal practice
  • fundamental rights (e.g. procedural rights, protection of privacy, or equality, non-discrimination and human dignity) as limits to the use of genAI in legal practice
  • access to justice through genAI
  • good administration by and through genAI
  • reducing bias and discrimination through the use of genAI

Submission

Please submit your abstract of up to 500 words as well as a short CV, including the author’s name, title, affiliation, and contact details, by 15 November 2025 via e-mail to legaltech@wu.ac.at. Kindly indicate whether your paper has already been published or accepted for publication.

The selection of abstracts will consider the uniqueness and significance of the proposals, along with the necessity of fostering a diverse conference in every aspect. Speakers will be notified by 1 December 2025. Authors taking part in the anthology are expected to submit their completed papers by 15 June 2026.

Costs

Participation in the Summit is free of charge. All participants are responsible for their own travel and accommodation expenses. Authors of accepted papers are expected to attend the conference in person.
